"ff water tower" was initially drawn for the cover design of a book on rachel whiteread's "water tower" sculpture, a public sculpture project in new york initiated by the public art fund. looking for a typeface to reflect new york street life without being too descriptive, i found a set of bold and basic cardboard stencils which i had seen used on fire doors, emergency exits and taxi cabs all over town. while the caps-only version provides two alternate sets of characters on upper- and lower case positions, the regular version features lower case characters, too.
